Special Issue on Qualitative Research and Health Education

In 2006 Health Education Research: Theory and Practice intends to publish a special issue on qualitative research and health education. An issue on the same theme was published in 1992, where the nature of qualitative research was examined and a case made for increasing its profile both within the discipline and within this journal. In the intervening period there has been a growth in qualitative research studies, not only in health education but across the field of health and health care. The term qualitative research lacks a universally agreed definition, a reflection of its complexity and its historical development within a number of disciplines. While not wishing to impose tight constraints on what is acceptable for the special issue, we will focus predominantly on work which has been undertaken within a broadly interpretivist paradigm. We feel it is timely to review the progress since 1992 of such research in health education and the associated issues and debates.

The special issue will be guest edited by Sylvia Tilford and Keith Tones.

It is hoped to produce an issue which celebrates the diversity of qualitative research alongside appropriate critiques. Papers are invited which report studies where findings are wholly or significantly derived from application of an interpretivist methodology. We also seek papers which offer critical reflections on any aspects of the philosophy and practice of qualitative research in health education or assessments of the overall contribution of qualitative research to the knowledge base needed to inform health education and promotion policy and practice.

All papers should conform to the Health Education Research: Theory and Practice Instructions to Authors which can be found in the first issue of each volume and on the journal website at http://www3.oup.co.uk/jnls/.list/healed/instauth

Papers will be subjected to the normal peer review process.

Enquiries should be addressed to Sylvia Tilford (s.tilford{at}btinternet.com). The deadline for receipt of submissions is January 1st 2006. Submissions can be electronic or paper based and sent to: Sylvia Tilford, Faculty of Health, Leeds Metropolitan University, Civic Quarter, Leeds LS2 3HE s.tilford{at}lmu.ac.uk or s.tilford{at}btinternet.com
