It is with pleasure that Health Education Research announces the appointment of Dr Jay Bernhardt as Assistant Editor for Information Technology. This appointment signals the Journal's recognition of the increasing importance of this emerging field to health education and practice. Such developments as the Internet research, CD-ROMs, computer-based information tailoring systems, interactive health education programs and other information technologies should provide new opportunities for health education and health promotion. In the Editorial in this issue titled `Health education and the digital divide: building bridges and filling chasms', Dr Bernhardt discusses some old issues for our field that this new technology is raising. As Dr Bernhardt notes, while information technology presents new opportunities, it also provides some challenges if we want to maximize its potential for health education. In addition, this issue contains a Call for Papers on Health Education and the Internet. Under the leadership of Drs Jay Bernhardt and John Hubley, this Call will result in a Special Issue devoted to state of the art research and critical analyses of the Internet and health education and health promotion.
The above initiatives reflect Health Education Research's recognition that there is much potential in information technology for improving the health of the public. At the same time, there is a pressing need for research to assist us in developing effective use of these new technologies. In line with the Journal's philosophy, we seek to encourage and publish research that combines the new capabilities of information technology with rigorous and theoretically informed research on health issues of major public health significance. We look forward to publication of the Special Issue on the Internet, and to occasional reports from Dr Bernhardt and others on the broader field of information technology.
