Collaboration between Health Education Reasearch and the International Union for health Promotion and Education

Keith Tones, Editor, Europe, Maurice Mittelmark and Jim Sorenson, Editor, Americas

Vice-President Scientific and Technical Development, IUHPE Editorial Board Member, HER

It is with considerable pleasure that we announce a strengthening of Health Education Research (HER)'s existing collaboration with the International Union for Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE). For readers not familiar with the IUHPE, it is an independent professional association of individuals and organizations that for nearly 50 years has been committed to improving the health of the people of the world through education, community action and the development of public policies. With more than 2000 members in over 90 countries, the IUHPE is the primary global non-governmental organization that provides an opportunity to build an international network to encourage the free exchange of ideas, knowledge, technical skills and experience. Your can learn more about the IUHPE by visiting http://www.iuhpe.nyu.edu/index.html.

There has been some chance overlap in membership in the Boards of the two organizations for many years and IUHPE members have enjoyed a discount on their subscription rates. Now, we will intensify our co-operation. The Journal is designated `Official Research Journal of the International Union for Health Promotion and Education'. Each issue will contain news and information from the IUHPE. We are examining ways the HER Editorial Board and the IUHPE Board of Trustees can assist each other to broaden readership of the Journal and expand membership in the IUHPE.

To this end, HER will publish IUHPE official announcements, information on membership, a list of the IUHPE Boards of Trustees and other such material as might be mutually agreed upon. The first of these items from IUHPE appears on pp. 243–248 of this issue. IUHPE members will continue to receive a generous discount on the normal HER subscription price.

As in any worthy partnership, the benefits will go both ways. The IUHPE Board of Trustees is committed to assisting HER expand its readership by promoting HER in other IUHPE publications and media outlets. HER will also receive free display space at all IUHPE World Conferences (the next is to be held in Paris, France, 15–20 July 2001). Of perhaps greatest importance, the IUHPE Board of Trustees is committed to assist HER expand its Editorial Board in order to maximize international involvement in the work of the Journal. Of course, editorial and publishing control of HER will remain in the hands exclusively of the Editors of HER and Oxford University Press. Also, neither organization takes on financial obligations of the other as part of collaboration.

The path to this intensified collaboration was a natural and easy one. The IUHPE mission, to promote global health and to contribute to the achievement of equity in health between and within countries of the world, is in perfect resonance with the aims of HER. The Journal has a strong record of publishing research on educational aspects of health promotion and this is likely to become even more pronounced as this collaboration moves forward.

To make this new partnership as productive for both entities as possible, readers of the one and members of the other are asked to assist. Health education researchers will find much to recommend joining the IUHPE, as is described elsewhere in this issue. Members of the IUHPE worldwide will support the Union's mission by contributing to HER and by letting others know that HER is an invaluable source of scientific information relevant to a wide range of educational, organizational, community and policy-oriented health promotion initiatives. Finally, all are asked to consider other ways that the two organizations can assist each other and forward your suggestions to us.
