Judy Rassaby, Sheila Hirst, David J.Hill, Richard Bennett and Valerie Clarke

Centre for Behavioural Research in Cancer, Anticancer Council of Victoria 1 Rathdowne Street, Carlton South, Victoria 3053, Australia

The rationale for the development of the Victoria (Australia) Mammacheck breast self-examination (BSE) small-group training program is discussed, the empirical and theoretical underpinnings of the program outlined, and the content of the program described. The program is delivered on a large scale throughout Victoria by a network of health educators. This report describes the experience of teaching BSE to the first 6 000 participants. The issue of recruitment is addressed and an indication of the characteristics of women attending the training sessions provided. The paper concludes with a discussion of the process of training the facilitators responsible for conducting training sessions throughout the State.
