In this article we will give an overview of attribution theory. Recently there has been an enormous increase in the use of attributional techniques to change people's behavior. Results from different studies will be presented and compared with each other. Furthermore it will be discussed how attribution theory is related to self-efficacy theory and how insights from attribution theory can be applied in (health) behavioral interventions. Finally, relapse prevention theory will be discussed and compared with attribution theory and self-efficacy theory.
