Government involvement in nutrition education: panacea or Pandora's box?

Laura S. Sims

College of Human Ecology, University of Maryland College Park, MD 20742, USA

Key governmental policy shifts have affected nutrition education activities in recent decades. These activities included legislation of new programs, promulgation of program regulations, and the issuing of a number of authoritative scientific reviews documenting the association between diet and health. Also during this period, the food industry and voluntary health associations stepped up their efforts to inform the American public. This paper reviews recent policy trends and identifies issues for the attention of nutrition educators, including: (1) the appropriate role for government in nutrition education, (2) quantification of dietary advice for consumers, (3) the effect of competing dietary messages for consumers' attention and comprehension, and (4) how to tailor general dietary messages to best meet the consumers' individual biochemical and nutritional needs.
