The present paper describes the theory of reasoned action and shows how it can be used to guide research into the determinants of different illicit drug use behaviors and serve as a framework for developing educational interventions directed at changing these behaviors. In illustrating the applicability of the theory in this behavioral domain, the necessity of tailoring one's intervention strategy to a given behavior in a given population is emphasized.
