Anabolic steroid usage in weight-trained athletes
Department of Health and Exercise Science, George Mason University, 4400 University Drive Fairfax, VA 22030, USA
This study was conducted to investigate the dosages of anabolic steroids utilized by athletes involved in competitive programs of body building, power lifting, and Olympic weight lifting. Analysis of the data indicated that subjects received from 6 to 10 times the prescribed clinical dosages of the steroid medications. It was further noted that at least 68% of the subjects had taken one of two anabolic steroids which are limited to usage in animals only. The typical cycle of steroid administration consisted of both injectable and oral medications being used simultaneously in a pyramiding fashion. As the athletes had become more familiar with steroid usage, it was observed that dosages increased significantly. Questions about the short- and long-term effects of anabolic steroids must be addressed, especially at the higher dosages which seem to be common among weight-trained athletes.
