This paper examines the impact of the decline in dental caries rates in the developed countries and its implications on dental health education research. The design and implementation of health education programmes in developing nations are investigated. Health education is then discussed in terms of the dental profession, the developments in professional advertising, advances in clinical dentistry, mass media and the limited success of water fluoridation projects. It is argued in the conclusions that dentists, other health professionals and behavioural scientists must collaborate on research so as to give dental health education greater academic credibility and thereby aid its contribution to community dental health.
